The Pierre du Bois Foundation launches the publication of "Papiers d'actualité/ Current Affairs in Perspective"

The Pierre du Bois Foundation's papers series "Papiers d'actualité/ CurrentAffairs in Perspective" puts current events into a historical perspective in order to better understand them.

To-day, maybe more than ever, it is difficult, if not impossible, to understand the world we are living in without knowing the past that led to it. Therefore, "Papiers d'actualité/ Current Affairs in Perspective" emphasise the value of historical phenomenon and their commemoration in today's world.

The Pierre du Bois Prize

The Pierre du Bois Prize is awarded to the best Ph.D. thesis in International History and Politics defended during the previous academic year at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. The 2009 Prize was awarded to Dr. Sophie Huber for her Ph.D. thesis on « Polyphonie sur l'identité européenne. Aux origines d'un discours identitaire, 1962-1973 » which was supervised by Prof. Andre Liebich and which was defended in August 2008.  The prize is valued at CHF 5000 and was awarded for the first time in October 2008 to Dr. Katrin Milzow for her thesis entitled « ‘National interests' and European integration: Discourse and Politics (1997-2004) ». Katrin defended her thesis in February 2008, under the supervision of Prof. Bruno Arcidiacono, after many long years work under the guidance of Prof. Pierre du Bois.

prof_burrindr_hubermmd_du_bois.jpgSummary of the winning thesis from September 2009

Summary of the winning thesis from October 2008

Milzow Katrin, ‘National Interests' and European Integration: Discourse and Politics (1997-2004), IHEID, July 2008, 405 pages.

The thesis analyses the public statements by the Heads of State or Government of Britain, France, and Germany between 1997 and 2004 on European Security and Defence Policy, agricultural policy, and the EU's recent eastern enlargements. It asks whether political discourse amounts to anything but random rhetoric, how it relates to events and policy priorities, and what it might say about the underlying dynamics of European integration. As a conceptual, legitimising, and bargaining tool, political discourse may not only be indicative of events but may also contribute directly to the dynamics of European politics. Focusing on discourses of ‘national interest', the study finds that they constitute a focal point for domestic legitimisation but also underlie calls for compromise, thus building a bridge to the ‘European'. Notwithstanding concerns about a (re)nationalisation of European politics, it then seems that discourses of ‘national interests' may play a constructive role in the process of integration.
